Frequently Asked Questions

The goal of the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra is to provide young musicians with quality full symphony orchestra training and performance experiences that are engaging, challenging, and fun.

How is participating in RSYO different than my student’s school band or orchestra?

We encourage all students to participate and be leaders in their school music programs, and also encourage private lessons when possible. Below are some of the differences you can expect between a school music program and the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra.

School Music Program Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra
Brass and wind instruments and string instruments are often in different ensembles. All instruments are together in a symphonic orchestra setting.
Teacher may give instruction on technical aspects of playing your instrument. Conductor focuses on musicality and playing as an ensemble.
Many instruments may be playing the same part. Brass and wind instruments are often only one on a part.

What is the audition process like? How fierce is the competition to join RSYO?

Audition requirements are listed online. RSYO is an educational performing ensemble. When students are auditioning, they are not competing against other students for a seat in the orchestra. We are willing to have large instrument sections with musicians doubling parts if there are a large number of qualified players. The purpose of the audition is to determine if the musician is advanced enough to be successful playing the level of repertoire necessary to be a member of RSYO. The skill level of the musician will also determine their seat placement in the orchestra.

My student hasn’t been playing for a full three years (or doesn’t meet other stated audition guidelines). Can they still audition?

We are open to having individual conversations with parents and musicians. The stated guidelines are to help ensure the musician is advanced enough to handle the repertoire RSYO performs, but are not necessarily rules to determining eligibility to audition.

How much does it cost to participate in RSYO?

For the 2023/24 Season, tuition is $475 for the year, and an additional $100 for students who are invited and accept the invitation to participate in Chamber Orchestra. Tuition is billed per semester, and payment plans and financial aid are available.

When do RSYO rehearsals take place?

Rehearsals are Sunday afternoons from 1:45 pm – 2:45 pm for Chamber Orchestra and 3:00 pm – 5:15 pm for Symphonic Orchestra.
