The passing of Michael Cunningham

If you attended our November 18 Classics Concert, you were undoubtedly moved by the world premiere performance of Michael Cunningham’s “Old War Poems”, based on poetry by Walt Whitman, and eloquently performed by Gen. John Borling.

I am deeply saddened to report that Michael died of a heart attack last Sunday, April 7. He was 66. I had looked forward to helping Michael spread the word about this wonderful piece, which should be heard by audiences everywhere. Michael had recently moved to North Carolina to care for his elderly mother.

During the months we worked together on the final orchestration of “Old War Poems” we developed a deep friendship, and had begun to make plans to perform other of Michael’s orchestral works. I will miss him very much.
