Behind the Mask – Letter from the Presenter

A Note from the Presenter

March, 2019

Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber has more titles and accolades than the Queen has hats! From one of only 15 EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winners to a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Webber is, perhaps, the most internationally popular composer of Musical Theatre in history. His Broadway shows rank among the longest running, with The Phantom of the Opera, taking the number one spot (recently celebrating its 31 year on the Great White Way) and Cats at number four. Last year’s live broadcast of Jesus Christ Superstar, starring John Legend, introduced an entirely new generation to the legendary pairing of Tim Rice, lyricist, and Webber. Just as many were introduced to the American Musical Theatre with the unforgettable live television performance of Mary Martin as Peter Pan back in 1960. It’s nice to know some cherished traditions have returned to slow us down in this fast-paced world!

Going to see a Broadway show is one tradition Webber has kept alive with 20 musicals to his credit, including Evita, Sunset Boulevard, and his latest Broadway hit School of Rock! Fortunately, two Broadway stars, well equipped to deliver this music (as they have both starred on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera) are here to sing. Ms. Sarah Pfisterer and Mr. Sean MacLaughlin have spent much of their careers delighting audiences on Broadway and concert stages around the world and they will, no doubt, thrill you tonight! Along with the second half of tonight’s program, dedicated completely to the music of Sir Andrew, you’ll hear hits in the first half from other Broadway greats such as Stephen Schwartz (Wicked), Marvin Hamlisch (A Chorus Line), Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors) and, of course a little Jersey Boys!

Earlier this season, Steven Larsen wrote that a “classic” is a work of art of recognized and established value. Webber is undeniably a “classic” and his music will continue to entertain for generations to come. To those of you who are new to this music, you’re in for a treat! For those of you who are closeted Starlight Express fans, tonight’s your night! Welcome to a wonderful evening of Broadway, welcome to Behind the Mask!
