In response to the Winnebago County Health Department’s recommendation that all large gatherings be suspended to limit community transmission of COVID-19, and the travel ban imposed by the Federal Government affecting guest artists, all scheduled Rockford Symphony Orchestra auditions are cancelled and will be rescheduled. The health and safety of all is our top priority.

The Rockford Symphony Orchestra (RSO) is located approximately 1½ hours west-by-northwest of downtown Chicago and offers approximately 40-45 services per season. Auditions will take place in Kresge Hall at the Riverfront Museum Park in Rockford, IL (map) on each date listed above.  The deadline to apply for auditions is Saturday, February 15, 2020. 

Excerpts of the music that are required for auditions can be provided as a PDF from the RSO on request. Email your requests to The RSO endeavors to make the audition process as easy as possible; however, candidates are ultimately responsible for providing their own music.

Applicants will be invited to audition on the basis of résumé screening. All requests for specific audition times must be made when submitting materials to be eligible for consideration. The RSO is not currently able to accommodate those individuals on H-1 or H-3 international visas or sponsor residency if selected for an open position or as a substitute performer.

A deposit check of $50 made out to the Rockford Symphony Orchestra and a résumé are required for each position applied.  Deposit checks will be returned to the candidate at the check-in desk upon their arrival.  Applicants may submit their résumé to or in hard copy through the mail.  All required items must be either received or postmarked by February 15, 2020 in order to be eligible for an audition. Please ensure that the candidate’s name is on the check. For those who qualify, an invitation with complete information will be sent approximately 10-14 days before the audition date.

Candidates wishing to audition as a substitute member for the vacant positions listed above may do so for their respective section. Auditions for regular and substitute positions in other sections will not be held at the present time.  Checks will be voided and shredded if candidates cancel their audition before the deadline or if they are deemed not eligible for an audition based on their current qualifications. Checks will be deposited within 5 days after audition date if applicants cancel their audition after the deadline for any reason.

Candidates whose materials are postmarked or received after the posted deadline will be placed on the audition waitlist and contacted if an audition time becomes available. Candidates placed on the waitlist may cancel any time before their confirmed audition time has been sent. If a position should not become available to waitlist candidates, their deposit check will be shredded.
