Rockford Symphony Orchestra features Chamber Orchestra Concerts

Published 12/22/2015

Rockford, IL –The Rockford Symphony Orchestra proudly features its members in an “up close and personal” format with two chamber orchestra concerts in two different locations on January 15 and 17, 2016. Join the RSO on Friday, January 15 at 7:30P in the sanctuary of Westminster Presbyterian Church on Bell School Road and on Sunday, January 17, at 2:00P, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church on Rural in Rockford.

Music Director Steve Larsen is enthusiastic about the opportunity to bring chamber orchestra repertoire to potentially new audiences in locations other than the Coronado. “Audiences in the 18th century and much of the 19th century would be absolutely astonished that anyone would want to hear music in a theater the size of the Coronado. There was a closeness, an intimacy between performer and audience that is lost in a big hall. We hope that smaller venues will make you feel closer to the music and the music makers, especially as we present works written for smaller ensembles.”

The program begins with Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas’ Ocho por Radio (‘Eight Musicians Broadcasting’), a tongue-in-cheek recreation of what one might hear while cruising AM radio in Mexico. Next, a work by the master of the huge post-romantic orchestra, Richard Strauss, who, having brought music to the precipice of atonality in his opera, Elektra, found inspiration in the delicate dance music of the 18th century French composer François Couperin. After intermission, bask in the sublimely beautiful Siegfried Idyll, written by Richard Wagner as a Christmas present for his wife, Cosima. We conclude with another installment of our ongoing celebration of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth with Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s witty suite from his ballet, Much Ado About Nothing.

Tickets for the performance are available online at www.rockfordsymphony.com or by calling the RSO box office at 815-965-0049.  Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door. Students 25 and under with valid I.D are $7.

The RSO Chamber Orchestra Concerts are part of the 2015·16 ComEd Classics Series.
