Home School Programs

Home school groups are continuing to discover all the RSO has to offer. Home school families and co-ops are invited to the Riverfront Museum Park for special Symphony Goes to Home School programs. Due to many requests from home school parents and groups, the series of SGTS presentation will be held in four sessions throughout the year. Each session features a different concept, group of musical instruments, or ensemble performance.

Upcoming classes include:

Get Up and Go!
11 a.m. – noon; Wednesday October 8, 2008
$5 per child; for ages 5-7

This class explores sounds we hear all around us (birds, donkeys, car horns etc.) and how music interprets those sounds. We’ll listen and move to all kinds of great tunes from the classical repertoire and learn about how different musical instruments interpret some of those sounds.

Meet the Maestro – What Do Conductor’s Do?
11 a.m. – noon; Wednesday, October 1, 2008
$5 per child for each session; ages 8-12

Why do orchestras need a conductor? Why do they wave their arms around? How does somebody get to be a conductor? Learn about conducting from a real conductor! Meet Dr. Alison Gaines who conducts the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra and learn how to conduct.

The Science in Music
11 a.m. – noon; Wednesday, November 5, 2008
$5 per child for each session; ages 8-12

What makes sound become music? Why does a guitar sound different from a violin? Learn about how musical instruments make sound travel and how different instruments make different sounds. You’ll get to make some simple musical instruments too!

The Math in Music
11 a.m. – noon; Wednesday, December 10, 2008
$5 per child for each session; ages 8-12

There’s math in music? Yes! Explore how numbers are part of understanding music. You’ll learn about reading music and how rhythm, counting and fractions come together. Create a simple melody and find out where the math is hiding.
