“Beethoven Live!”
Annual RSO Youth Concert
10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
Wednesday, April 25, 2012
Coronado Performing Arts Center
Two 50-minute performances will be given for regional elementary and middle school students. The all-Beethoven program will present the Rockford Symphony Orchestra
and selected members of the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) performing such masterpieces as selections from Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 2, 3, 5, 6, and 9
plus other great compositions such as “Rage Over a Lost Penny” and the Egmont Overture. The orchestra will be conducted by RSYO conductor Daniel Black in his conducting debut with the RSO.
Pre-concert education materials available to teachers and home school parents registered for the concert will prepare students for the music they will hear in the concert. Also included will be background information about Beethoven’s challenges with his hearing impairment and his triumphs as a composer aspiring to celebrate the transcendent qualities of music as well as the unity of mankind. This year’s Youth Concert will surely be inspiring to students and teacher alike.
NEW THIS YEAR, audience members will get to perform with the orchestra under the direction of Herr Beethoven himself (portrayed by RSO Music Director Steven Larsen). More information about this exciting opportunity will be available soon.

More than 2,500 public, private, and home school students from a seven-county area visited the Coronado Performing Arts Center on April 23, 2010 for the most recent Youth Concert titled “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
In 1980 the RSO performed its first concert for area youth, dubbed a "Rug Concert," since children sat on pieces of carpet on the floor. Since moving the performances to the Coronado Theater in 2001, the RSO annually hosts more than 100 area schools and home schools to attend this educational, 50-minute concert. Teaching materials, including study guides and recordings of selected pieces, are provided to teachers for advance preparation in the classroom.
Music and classroom teachers who schedule a class to attend the Youth Concert will receive a voucher for a free Rockford Symphony Orchestra concert ticket. Vouchers may be exchanged for a Classics Series single ticket for the 2011/12 season by calling the box office at 815.965.0049.
